Photo of William Barber discovered!
Available below in multiple sizes for download

The Liberty Seated Collectors Club (LSCC), along with the Barber Coin Collectors' Society (BCCS), is happy to announce the discovery of the first known photograph of William Barber, 5th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, and designer of the Trade Dollar and the Double Dime (20-cent piece), along with many patterns and medals.

After research working with two of the great-great-grandsons of William Barber (and great-grandsons of Charles Barber), a long-sought-after photo of William has been found in the family archives. With the generosity of the family, the LSCC and BCCS are pleased to publish this new photograph, and the painting of a young William Barber believed to date from the 1840s. We also include images of the William Barber medal (by Charles, and previously the only known image of him).

Feel free to use them in any publication, website, catalog, etc.
When appropriate, please credit the Liberty Seated Collectors Club and/or the Barber Coin Collectors' Society as the source.

The images are available in multiple sizes and formats.

  • PNG format provides maximum-possible quality.
They are excellent when inserting into other documents, such as Word and PowerPoint.
The background of the round images (William medal) is transparent (for overlaying).
They are most often used for professional-quality results, and accordingly the file sizes can be very large.
  • JPEG format provides good quality and compression limits files sizes to a much more modest level.
This format is excellent for websites and most documents.
There are multiple sizes available for each of the images: small, large, and high-resolutiion (the largest currently available). Enjoy!
